I’ve been thinking about how I preach authentic social media and being yourself online…so I thought I’d share my journal entries with you. I’m nervous! Here it goes:

Crash The Original Black Dog
Yes, my company “Black Dog Social Media” was named after a Dave Mathews Band Song. My first  love was a black lab , I named him after DMB’s “Crash Into Me.”

Crash Into Me – Dave Matthews …
Crash was from a great breeder: honest, smart, loyal, fun and strong. All the things that are important in social media.
Corny, but true.
Black Dogs are also the ones not as readily adopted[......]

We Google Buzz users, through behavior shifts, are contributing to defining what’s important in the future of social media. Are we GeeBee’s being monitored by the Google “Others” to see how we organize our followers, what content we respond to, and so on?
I love this post that I found while buzzin’ around my Gmail. I follow Chris Brogan, who commented on Christopher S Penn’s “Awaken Your[......]

Do Twitter followers mean anything to you? One way to find out is with this cool mashup site:
twwittersheepKey in your Twitter name and it creates a word cloud from your Twitter flock. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what shows up. See mine here : @caramandart.
The words that stood out on mine were ones like “GREAT” “SOCIAL” “SMCVB” & “MARKETING”.  Peculiar the word “blues” was right next[......]

cowsA Blog is not a Newsletter.

It is a conversation starter.
1.) Use a catchy title, one that makes someone stop and say “I just gotta read that!” Summarize your point in the title if you can.
2.) Keep it short! 250 Words is best. (400 tops! People are in a hurry and you’re lucky they are reading at all! ) A lot to say? Break it up into a few short posts.  More blogs with fewer words posted through the week will do more for a bu[......]

How did you feel when you got your own first Follow Friday mention? Its pretty  good feeling, right?

  • A Follow Friday where you are mentioned with a comment as to WHY you should be followed, is like an Oscar nod.
  • Receiving more followers from a Follow Friday mention, is like taking home the statue. They like me! They really like me!

But Wait!

Have you ever been on Facebook, start a chat and then realize its not them online but their better half on your friend’s wall instead?

If you are logged in to your spouse’s page (because you don’t have a page of your own), and you see my chat note pop up:

  1. Don’t get nervous and pretend you are your wife.
  2. Don’t pretend you are not online. Please use the chat button to go offline.
  3. Don’t ignore me as I will worr[......]

Would you send a birthday card to someone without a personal introduction at the beginning? And then forget to sign your name, assuming they know who you are?

That’s what its like when you Facebook Friend someone and you don’t say why you are connecting. True, sometimes you know them already so well that you think you don’t have to.
But you should.

Where is the most unusual  place you have ever posted to Facebook or Twitter?  The bathroom? In line at the store?  In Bed? During a job interview? While driving? In the ambulance? During your mugshot?
How about the Intensive Care Unit?

Rude Awakening #2:
Kids know more about social media than us! (Could this be true? Do you care?)
Here’s my thought process: I’ve been working on launching the Virginia Beach chapter of www.SocialMediaClub.org because I dig their  “If You Know It, Share It” tag line.  Picture events where all walks of life hang out   to selflessly impart skills, with no guise of self-promotion.
