6:00pm: I put dinner in the oven.

6:05: Sit at kitchen island with laptop, Logged into Facebook. Hear that sucking sound?

9:00pm: Jolted by smoke alarm blaring. I hear, “Mommy! Mommy!” My dirty faced kid is starving, homework still not done, husband threatening to pack his bags. Promise to try harder tomorrow.

Ok, You got me. This isn’t really my diary but I must admit I get lost in the social media black hole quite often. My hubby loves me very much but he is finally burnt out over social media and how started to consume me. “That’s what happens when you get to do what you enjoy”, I tell him!

I not only participate in social media for myself but I run other social communities for a living! So balance is really important for me. You can really do your social media tasks in small increments each day to reap benefits of connecting online and still have a life.

Setting up and initial learning social media takes time. But once you get the basics, learn to get in and get out. Skip Farmville, Mafia wars and so on. “Like” a few friends photos, comment back on your own wall, update your status, update your Facebook fan page if you have one, rinse and repeat.

With practice you’ll figure a routine of tasks to accomplish and when focused can be done in short increments of time.

Timers Work.

  • Mobile phone alarms are fun you can pick a song you really hate to snap you out of it.
  • Set your bedroom alarm clock but work in the living room, this makes you get up & shut it off.
  • Kitchen alarms are my fave as they have such an annoying , effective sound.
  • A sand-filled hourglass would be way cool, you have to be very hip to pull that off. (Who out there has one? Inquiring minds want to know!)

Silly? Maybe. Effective? Yes.

  • Use only a few social media platforms and do them well.
  • Shut down your laptop and smart phone and spend time with the family or friends one night.

Do you get sucked into the social media vacuum? Any advice?
