Crash The Original Black Dog
Yes, my company “Black Dog Social Media” was named after a Dave Mathews Band Song. My first love was a black lab , I named him after DMB’s “Crash Into Me.”
Crash was from a great breeder: honest, smart, loyal, fun and strong. All the things that are important in social media. Corny, but true.
Black Dogs are also the ones not as readily adopted from Shelters. How do I know this? I manage social media for Virginia Beach Animal Control Shelter to help give homeless animals a voice. I met a sweet, playful black lab mix who noone seemed to want to take home. Otis (as the volunteers named him) has dark black fur, a lame paw and a few scars from deep wounds he had when he was found in the streets.
Some people choose looks over temperament I guess.
Gentle soul. No fear. No aggression. All love. Days and weeks go by. No one adopted him. He spent too much time in Cage #103. I decided to take him home when a volunteer pleaded for help. Time runs out fast so animal control will put a dog down for space and because its too stressful for them to be in the horrid shelter too long.
I thought.. “A dog with baggage: this is going to be rough.” Well, it turns out shelter dogs are grateful. And easy. (if you pick the right dog for you, it is, but thats another blog) He is so good natured that he became part of our permanent family.
Back to Crash. He, unlike shelter dogs, never had a bad day in his life. Well, until at age 8 he got bone cancer, needed bone sample test, and lost a leg. During his remission, he went on walks, swam, and played. 3 legs and still his old self. Cancer came back and he has since passed. He taught me about enjoying each day and how even on our last day here on earth, even if we have pain, we can still wag our tail.
So, I promise you, every day I work on your social media marketing, I think of the trust and honesty that he showed me. (His pictures are everywhere!)
But really, learning from and living out his example is my promise to HIM.
