Would you send a birthday card to someone without a personal introduction at the beginning? And then forget to sign your name, assuming they know who you are?

blankcard

That’s what its like when you Facebook Friend someone and you don’t say why you are connecting. True, sometimes you know them already so well that you think you don’t have to.

But you should.

When I receive  a Friend Request , sometimes I think, “hmmm I don’t remember this guy”.   So I then have to stop and look at which contacts we have in common, and if none, look at your profile to see if you are cool to connect with and not some spammer or friend stacker.

To make it worse, when I  try to review your Facebook info, you have privacy on your Facebook wall! (Although I’m intrigued as to what could be so awesome that you are hiding behind that “only shares certain information with everyone” box.)

Whew. Its easier just to instantly hit “Ignore”.

Yes or No

So please, I beg you, when you send a Friend Request, just hit the Personal Message link, (It’s right there for you!) and type a one-liner.

I could be missing a nice person and great opportunities, but I’ll never know if you don’t sign the card.

What is your experience with Connection Requests? What situations do you Ignore requests?  When do you think its ok to skip the personal message? If you use for business, what guides do you use for social media etiquette?

  5. Seems like everyday I get a friend who says “who is this requesting me as a friend… they are friends with you” Friend farming is one of my biggest pet peeves in social media. I have almost 800 friends on my profile and I can say with pride that I’ve connected with more than 90% of them!

Eventually we’ll see “Friend Farming” in Webster’s Dictionary!
Friend Farm , v. to contact others without proper message and for false popularity. and n. a fan page full of people one doesn’t really know or care to know, Friend Farmer adj. one who friends just to be nosy with no intention of engaging (see Friend Stalker or Friend Stacker, or Friendless)
