Rude Awakening #2:

Kids know more about social media than us! (Could this be true? Do you care?)

Here’s my thought process: I’ve been working on launching the Virginia Beach chapter of www.SocialMediaClub.org because I dig their  “If You Know It, Share It” tag line.  Picture events where all walks of life hang out   to selflessly impart skills, with no guise of self-promotion.

No one is the master. Everyone can contribute.

I also like SocialMediaClub.org because part of their mission is social media literacy in educational curriculum. This got me wondering how much do young kids know? What would my social media savvy be like if I had known about it since I was a kid?

So I took my Flip camera out and , without any preparation (pinkie swear)  and interviewed two kids.

Please comment on what thoughts this 60 second video evokes? (no deep thoughts necessary but I ‘m sure you have something to say…)

  1. Kids know what it is about my friends kids chat with me more on facebook then their parents do because they can’t type as fast as they can talk! I love facebook to re-connect with family and friends that live in other states!

I took a webinar on using facebook for a photo studio and, no kidding, the woman teaching the class said if we had any questions beyond the training, to go find a teenager. If she wants to do something and can’t figure it out, she tells her 16 year old daughter what she wants the girl figures it out for her. I recently hired a teenager to help us at work with putting together short video clips for the doctor’s social media efforts. So truly, if you don’t know how to do something online, somebody under 25 is your best resource. I know this first hand!!

  3. “Its fun to tell people about what youre doin at work” hilarious but so true when you love what you do! Every business owner needs to understand that to fill in the gray area of the 80/20 rule.

Great comments! It appears the answer is yes, kids know more than us! It amazes me how quickly kids pick things up, not only the technical side but also the nuances of how to use it properly. They get it. Sharing & talking comes naturally for kids.

  9. Ahhh the innocent minds of kids. See thats what great about children, they don’t over complicate things and can explain things in simple terms while fully grasping this concept.

Are you kidding? My dogs know more about social media than I do but I’m determined to learn it! I’m looking forward to your Social Media Club. Learn one, do one, teach one right? Have your son come so he can explain it to me.

  14. Cara says:

OMG Yes I should have the kids be the guest speakers at the Social Media Club VB events! I’ll have to check their busy schedules to see if they can fit us in. ;)
